Once Grace finally gets into a book she tends to enjoy reading; therefore, she would call herself a reader. However, she is not the best reader and has a hard time finding books that she likes enough to read all the way through. She is a slow reader so she doesn't enjoy it as much because it take so long. Grace learned to read in kindergarten when she was little. She learned to read because her teacher helped her sound out words and memorize them. People read because it is fun to get different points of view of the world. You can see what the world looks like from the viewpoint of a rich business man or a child living in poverty. To be a good reader it takes practice. Grace used to love reading so she was good at it because she practiced a lot. As she grew older, she slowly stopped reading as much and fell behind. For Grace, the easiest part of reading is when you can relax and enjoy a book that is easy for you to read. Books without complicated words and dialects make it much easier. The hardest part about reading for Grace is when the author uses a dialect she's not used to. It makes it much harder for her to comprehend what is happening in the book. Normally Grace chooses books to read by seeing if she recognizes the title. If it has been recommended to her before it stands out to her as one she should read. She looks for books that are interesting and that she can relate to some part of her life. She normally likes love stories and books about people who are traveling somewhere they have never been before. The only time she ever reads at home is if it is for a grade. Grace finds it hard to make time for reading in her busy schedule. Overall, Grace feels like reading is something that she needs to start enjoying more. She used to love it in elementary school and she feels like this class might help her to enjoy it more.
Grace believes she is a writer because she normally enjoys writing assigned papers. She learned how to write in elementary school be spelling out words in class and creating short stories. People write because it is a way to express emotion or take your own thoughts and make them permanent. They can also write for an assignment, to thank someone, to write a letter, or to get into college. Writing is used in almost all important aspects of most Americans lives. Grace thinks that being a good writer really depends on how you connect with your audience. As a writer you must focus on your audience and how they will enjoy your piece more. However, you can't be afraid to put things into writing that have never been said before. Grace likes to be given an interesting prompt and then having to write something about that. She doesn't enjoy creative writing because she likes to be told roughly what to write about. If she is writing it is mostly only ever for school so she is normally is told a topic. If she is told to do a creative writing it is normally about things that are currently happening in her life. Responses that help her the most with her writing is lots of notes written on it. When she gets another paper it helps her to look over the written corrections and apply them to her new writing piece. In general, Grace feels that her writing isn't good because she doesn't know enough grammar rules to put down exactly what she wants to say
